We’ve all heard the saying, "The days are long, but the years are short."
It’s a cliché for a reason—because it is painfully true. One minute you are celebrating a milestone, and the next, you’re looking back at photos wondering where the time went. That feeling—the desire to hit the "pause" button on life—is exactly what drew me into the world of photography, and specifically, why I fell in love with photographing families.
How It Started: It Runs in the Family
My love for photography didn't just appear out of nowhere; it’s actually in my DNA.
Both of my grandfathers were avid photographers. Growing up, I watched them constantly document our family trips, casual get-togethers, and big events. They understood the value of freezing a moment in time. Naturally, I caught the "photography bug" from them.
It started with a simple Kodak instant film camera I was given when I was young. From there, my passion grew as I started borrowing my father's Canon AE-1 Program to learn the ropes. By high school, I was fully committed to the craft, spending my sophomore through senior years working on the yearbook staff. That journey—from a kid with an instant camera to capturing school memories—laid the foundation for Rob Lara Photography.
I realized early on that a photograph is the closest thing we have to a time machine. It allows us to travel back to a feeling, a smell, and a specific moment in time that would otherwise fade.
Why Families?
There are many genres of photography—landscapes, products, high fashion—but I chose families. Why? Because family is where the real magic happens.
I love the "perfectly imperfect" moments. Sure, we all want that one shot where everyone is looking at the camera and smiling. But my "why" is found in the moments in between:
The way a toddler looks up at their parent with total adoration.
The inside jokes shared between siblings.
The chaotic laughter when things don’t go exactly as planned.
Families are dynamic, messy, and beautiful. Being invited into your circle to document that bond is a privilege I don’t take lightly. I am not just taking pictures of what you look like; I want to capture who you are right now, in this season of life.
Creating Heirlooms
In a digital age, we are often guilty of letting our photos live and die on our camera rolls. My goal as a family photographer is to help you create tangible history.
When I look through my lens, I’m not just thinking about your Instagram feed. I’m thinking about 20 years from now. I’m thinking about your children showing these photos to their children. I want to give you images that serve as anchors to your past—heirlooms that prove, "We were here, we were together, and we were happy."
Let’s Tell Your Story
Whether you are in the thick of the toddler years, navigating life with teenagers, or celebrating a multi-generational gathering here in the Fresno area, your story deserves to be told.
Thank you for letting me be a part of your journey. If it’s been a while since you’ve updated your family portraits, let’s connect. I’d love to help you hit "pause" for just an afternoon.
